NHTSA campaign 16V308000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC.: Power Train › Driveline › Driveshaft

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. reported this defect to federal regulators on May 17, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 136. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain model year 2016 AMG GT S vehicles manufactured June 1, 2015 to July 24, 2015. In affected vehicles, the adhesive bond between the carbon-fiber driveshaft and the rear flange may fail, and as a result, there may be a loss of torque to the rear wheels.

The risk

If the adhesive bond fails and results in a loss of torque to the rear wheels, the vehicle operator may be unable to move the vehicle, or may experience deceleration if the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

The remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the carbon-fiber driveshaft, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on July 29, 2016. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2016050008.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V308000.
