Great Lakes Manufacturing Inc.: Structure › Body › Bumpers

Great Lakes Manufacturing Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on May 11, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 360. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Great Lakes Manufacturing Inc. (Great Lakes) is recalling certain model year 1998-2016 Drywall Pup trailers manufactured January 1, 1998, to April 29, 2016. The rear impact guards on the affected trailers do not extend within 4" of the side of the vehicle. As such, these trailers fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 224, "Rear Impact Protection."

The risk

If the rear impact guards to not stretch the required length, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

The remedy

Great Lakes will notify owners, and dealers will retrofit a new rear impact guard, free of charge. The recall began on June 29, 2016. Owners may contact Great Lakes customer service at 1-920-842-2012.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V286000.
