NHTSA campaign 16V271000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Kaufman Trailers: Suspension › Rear › Axle › Non-powered Axle Assembly

Kaufman Trailers reported this defect to federal regulators on May 4, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 522. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Kaufman Trailers (Kaufman) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Flatbed Equipment and Wedge Car Hauler trailers manufactured April 1, 2015, to April 30, 2016. The lock nuts that secure the axle hanger to the springs may not have been properly crimped allowing the nut to loosen and detach during operation.

The risk

If the nuts were to fall off, the bolts could loosen, and the axle may disconnect from the spring hangers, shifting or detaching from the trailer and increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Kaufman will notify owners, and provide them with new Nylock replacement nuts, free of charge. The recall began on May 20, 2016. Owners may contact Kaufman customer service at 1-336-790-6800.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V271000.
