NHTSA campaign 16V204000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Daimler Trucks North America LLC: Service Brakes, Electric

Daimler Trucks North America LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on Apr 11, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 2,989. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain model year 2013-2016 FCC XCS, XCM, XCR, XCL, XCP, XBS, XBR, and XBP trucks manufactured from January 7, 2013, through June 1, 2015. On certain motorhome chassis built with a heavier, adjustable, offset, foot pedal, the brake activation signal to certain towed devices may not deactivate when the motorhome service brakes are released.

The risk

If the brake activation signal to a towed device remains active when the motorhome chassis service brakes are released, the brakes on a towed device may remain engaged depending on brake configuration of the trailer. As a result, the brakes would drag and possibly overheat potentially resulting in a fire. Additionally, following drivers may be confused by the motorhome's actions, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will modify the affected brake assemblies, free of charge. The recall began on June 6, 2016. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA's recall number for this campaign is FL-704.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V204000.
