HME, Inc.: Power Train › Axle Assembly
HME, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jan 5, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
HME, Inc. (HME) is recalling one 2015 SFO fire service chassis vehicle manufactured on July 31, 2015 and equipped with a drive axle manufactured by Marmon-Herrington. The affected axle may have hex nuts on the flange yoke that may not have been properly tightened.
The risk
If the hex nuts are not tightened to specification, the driveshaft may disconnect from the drive axle, resulting in a loss of propulsion and increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy
HME will notify the owner, and a dealer will inspect the torque and if necessary tighten the bolts, free of charge. The recall began on February 24, 2016. Owners may contact HME customer service at 1-616-534-1463.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V002000.
