NHTSA campaign 15V657000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC.: Seat Belts › Front

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 14, 2015 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 2,580. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain model year 2015 S550 4Matic Coupe, AMG S63 4Matic Coupe, and AMG S65 vehicles manufactured January 27, 2014, to April 2, 2015. In the affected vehicles, left-side front seat belts may have been installed on the right-side and vice versa. As a result, the installation angle may be incorrect, affecting the seat belt locking behavior. Additionally, the child seat restraint function for the passenger seat would not be available. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection," and FMVSS number 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies."

The risk

If the seat belt is installed improperly, it may not properly restrain the seat occupant in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

The remedy

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the installation of the seat belts, correcting them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on October 30, 2015. MBUSA's recall number is 2015100002. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 15V657000.
