NHTSA campaign 15V329000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Navistar, Inc.: Engine and Engine Cooling › Exhaust System › Manifold/Header/Muffler/Tail Pipe

Navistar, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on May 29, 2015 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 102. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 International 9900 trucks manufactured January 6, 2014, to March 12, 2015, and 2015-2016 International Lonestar trucks manufactured February 20, 2014, to March 13, 2015. The affected vehicles are equipped with a 6" diameter stack tail pipe, that may not have sufficient support. The unsupported weight of the upper stack tail pipe and vibration associated with normal vehicle operation over time may cause a crack of the weld joint between the inlet pipe and the flare expansion of the stack tail pipe, which may result in partial or full separation of the stack tail pipe from the vertical exhaust pipe.

The risk

If the stack tail pipe separates from the exhaust pipe it can fall into the roadway possibly hitting another vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stack tail pipe with a one piece stack tail pipe, free of charge. The recall began on July 20, 2015. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar's number for this recall is 15511.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 15V329000.
