NHTSA campaign 15V208000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Hino Motors Sales U.S.A., Inc.: Suspension › Front › Springs › Leaf Spring Assembly › U-bolt, Leaf Spring to Axle

Hino Motors Sales U.S.A., Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Apr 7, 2015 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1,951. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Hino Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc. (Hino) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 238, 258, 268, and 338 trucks manufactured January 5, 2015, to March 20, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the U-bolt that connects the suspension springs to the front axle may have been overtightened.

The risk

If the U-bolt was overtightened, the bolt may stretch resulting in it loosening or failing. Either result may cause a loss of steering ability, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

The remedy

Hino will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front axle U-bolts on the subject vehicles free of charge. The recall began on June 5, 2015. Owners may contact Hino customer service at 1-248-699-9300.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 15V208000.
