NHTSA campaign 14V761000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Heil Company: Trailer Hitches

Heil Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 1, 2014 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 129. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Heil Company (Heil) is recalling certain model year 2000-2014 Petroleum Pull Trailers manufactured August 29, 2000, to September 12, 2014. On the affected trailers, the cables of the secondary coupling system may fail to keep the trailer connected to the tow vehicle if the pintle hitch connection should fail.

The risk

A failure of the cables of the secondary coupling system after the pintle hitch has become disconnected, could result in the trailer detaching from the tow vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Heil will notify owners and dealers and will install larger diameter secondary coupling cables, free of charge. The recall began on December 29, 2014. Owners may contact Heil customer service at 1-800-400-6913.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 14V761000.
