NHTSA campaign 14V730000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Forest River, Inc.: Equipment Adaptive/Mobility

Forest River, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Nov 13, 2014 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 46. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2010-2012 Starcraft Bus Quest and Prodigy school buses manufactured January 13, 2010, to November 17, 2011 equipped with certain model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510 wheelchair lifts manufactured by Ricon Corporation. The platform side plate of the affected wheelchair lifts may crack.

The risk

If the platform side plates crack, the lift platform can separate from the lift and come to rest against the vehicle's lift door. When the doors are opened, the platform may fall out, increasing the risk of injury to the lift operator.

The remedy

Starcraft Bus will notify owners to take buses to a Ricon dealer or service center who will install supplemental platform support bumpers. Any platform that has already started cracking will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began January 9, 2015. Owners may contact Forest River customer service at 1-219-533-5934, or Ricon customer service at 1-800-322-2884.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 14V730000.
