NHTSA campaign 14V725000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Harley-Davidson Motor Company: Exterior Lighting › Turn Signal

Harley-Davidson Motor Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Nov 12, 2014 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 4,688. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 FLS Softail motorcycles manufactured March 25, 2013, to October 2, 2014. The affected vehicles may have been manufactured without lamp-outage detection for the front turn signals. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

The risk

Without the turn signal lamp outage indicator, the rider may not be aware that a front turn signal is not working. And without working front turn signals, there is an increased risk of a crash.

The remedy

Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will correct the body control module software, free of charge. The recall began November 24, 2014. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson's number for this recall is 0618.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 14V725000.
