NHTSA campaign 14V648000 · Part 573 safety recall report

BMW of North America, LLC: Visibility › Rearview Mirrors/Devices › Exterior

BMW of North America, LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 16, 2014 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 53. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2015 X3 and X4 Sports Activity Vehicles manufactured July 28, 2014 to July 29, 2014. The affected vehicles may have been produced with a driver's side exterior rearview mirror that was designed to meet non-US market requirements. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards No. 111, "Rearview Mirrors."

The risk

The driver may not notice that vehicles viewed in the mirror are closer than they appear, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's side exterior rearview mirror, free of charge. The recall began on December 16, 2014. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or [email protected].

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 14V648000.
