NHTSA campaign 14V521000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Gillig LLC: Fuel System, Diesel

Gillig LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 28, 2014 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 231. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Gillig LLC (Gillig) is recalling certain model year 2014 Low Floor transit buses manufactured from May 23, 2014, through August 1, 2014. The Cummins ISB or ISL engines in these vehicles may have been equipped with Fleetguard UFF-XT fuel filters, part number FF63009, whose filter shell may separate from the fuel filter nut plate causing the engine to stall without warning.

The risk

If the engine stalls unexpectedly there is an increased risk of a crash.

The remedy

Cummins will notify owners on behalf of Gillig, and Cummins service centers will replace the fuel filter, free of charge. The recall began on September 16, 2014. Owners may contact Gillig at 1-510-785-1500 or Cummins customer service at 1-812-377-3713.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 14V521000.
