Spartan Motors, Inc.: Fuel System, Diesel

Spartan Motors, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 18, 2014 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 87. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Spartan Motors Chassis, Inc. (Spartan) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Gladiator emergency vehicles, 2013-2014 Metrostar emergency vehicles, 2015 motorhome chassis, and 2015 school buses chassis. The Cummins ISB or ISL engines in these vehicles may have been equipped with Fleetguard UFF-XT fuel filters, part number FF63009, whose filter shell may separate from the fuel filter nut plate causing the engine to stall without warning.

The risk

If the engine stalls unexpectedly, there is an increased risk of a crash.

The remedy

Spartan has notified the final stage manufacturers, and Cummins will replace the affected fuel filters, free of charge. The recall began in August 2014. Owners may contact Spartan customer service at 1-517-543-6400. Owners may also contact Cummins customer service at 1-800-223-4583.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 14V505000.
