Jerr-Dan Corporation: Equipment › Mechanical › Wrecker and Wheel Lift Devices

Jerr-Dan Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on May 13, 2014 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 2,303. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Jerr-Dan Corporation (Jerr-Dan) is recalling certain model year 2007-2014 Standard Duty Wreckers manufactured November 1, 2007, through March 3, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the underlift boom tilt cylinder may drift down while a vehicle is being towed.

The risk

If the underlift boom tilt cylinder drifts down during towing, the vehicle that is being towed may contact the road surface, increasing the risk of the vehicle crash.

The remedy

Jerr-Dan will notify owners and dealers will replace the underlift tilt circuit counterbalance valve, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Jerr-Dan customer service at 1-800-926-9666.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 14V248000.
