NHTSA campaign 14V242000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Daimler Trucks North America LLC: Power Train › Axle Assembly

Daimler Trucks North America LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on Apr 29, 2014 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 73. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is recalling certain model year 2013 Freightliner Cascadia vehicles with rear axles assembled by Meritor and equipped with ConMet Preset Plus Hubs manufactured from August 6, 2012 through December 7, 2012. In the affected axles, the axle hub may be missing a locking snap ring.

The risk

If the snap ring is missing, the rear wheels may separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the affected wheel ends for the lock ring, and install them as necessary, free of charge. The safety recall began on June 26, 2014. Owners may contact DTNA at 1-800-547-0712. The manufacturer's number for this recall is FL-653.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 14V242000.
