PACCAR Incorporated: Power Train › Automatic Transmission › Park/Neutral Start Interlock Switch

PACCAR Incorporated reported this defect to federal regulators on Jan 14, 2014 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 85. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2011-2014 model year Kenworth T440 vehicles manufactured March 10, 2010, through September 23, 2013 and equipped with Allison transmissions, Cummins Westport ISL-G engines, and NAMUX2 software. In the affected vehicles, the engine harness may have been installed incorrectly rendering the neutral start interlock inoperable.

The risk

If the engine harness is installed incorrectly, the truck may be able to be started with the transmission in gear, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

PACCAR will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and correct the connection on the engine harness, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by early March 2014. Customers may contact PACCAR at 1-425-468-7400. Paccar's number for this recall is 14KWA.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 14V008000.
