NHTSA campaign 14E023000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Harley-Davidson Motor Company: Service Brakes, Hydraulic

Harley-Davidson Motor Company reported this defect to federal regulators on May 16, 2014 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 209. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) is recalling certain accessory Chrome Hand Control Lever Kits, part number 36700053, intended for use on 2014 Harley Davidson XL Sportster motorcycles. The affected kits may have an excess of chrome plating on the brake lever which could prevent the full return of the front brake master cylinder piston.

The risk

If the brake master cylinder piston does not return to the proper position, the front brake pressure would not be relieved and the front wheel may lock up, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the affected front brake levers, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on June 17, 2014. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson's number for this recall is 0156.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 14E023000.
