NHTSA campaign 13V642000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Nova Bus: Electrical System

Nova Bus reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 19, 2013 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 264. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Nova Bus is recalling certain 2009-2012 model year LFS and LFS HEV transit buses equipped with Sure Power DC-DC converters containing a particular epoxy sealing, aka 'potting', compound. The specific potting compound used in the subject products for insulation was found to be capable of conducting electricity after being exposed to heat.

The risk

Once electrically conductive, the material is capable of melting and burning, increasing the risk of a fire.

The remedy

Nova Bus will notify owners and dealers will inspect and replace the converters, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in January 2014. Owners may contact Nova Bus at 1-450-472-6410. Nova Bus's numbers for this recall are CR3030, CR3031, CR3032, CR3033 and CR3034 (depending on the converter's part number and location of in the vehicle).

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 13V642000.
