New Flyer Industries Ltd.: Equipment
New Flyer Industries Ltd. reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 20, 2013 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 12. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
New Flyer Industries is recalling certain model year 2012 XN40 transit buses manufactured October 30, 2012, through November 27, 2012, and equipped with certain Sportworks Northwest Apex 3 bicycle racks. In the affected racks, cracks may develop where the latch tube is welded to the pivot tabs connected to the frame. Over time, the cracks may lead to separation of the latch tube and latch handle.
The risk
If the latch handle and tube fall from the rack it would create a potential road hazard for other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy
New Flyer will notify owners and Sportworks Northwest will replace the frames under warranty, free of charge. The recall began on October 30, 2013. Owners may contact New Flyer at 1-800-665-2637 or Sportworks at 1-888-861-0555 ext. 2. New Flyer's campaign number is R13-022.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 13V459000.
