NHTSA campaign 13V453000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Spartan Motors, Inc.: Service Brakes, Hydraulic › Foundation Components › Hoses, Lines/Piping, and Fittings

Spartan Motors, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 18, 2013 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 75. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Spartan Motors Chassis, Inc. (Spartan Chassis) is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Transit Bus Chassis Cab buses manufactured February 17, 2011, through August 8, 2013; and equipped with a front sway bar on the independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes. In the affected vehicles, the fasteners attaching the sway bar to the frame may come loose.

The risk

If the sway bar detaches, it may damage the hydraulic brake lines resulting in reduced braking power. As such, the vehicle would require a longer distance to stop, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Spartan Chassis will notify owners, and dealers will install new fasteners with appropriate torque requirements, free of charge. The recall began on September 29, 2013. Owners may contact Spartan Chassis at 1-517-543-6400. Spartan Chassis' number for this campaign is 13018.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 13V453000.
