NHTSA campaign 13V373000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Silver Eagle Manufacturing Company: Suspension › Rear › Axle › Non-powered Axle Assembly

Silver Eagle Manufacturing Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 20, 2013 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 155. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Silver Eagle Manufacturing Company (Silver Eagle) is recalling certain model year 1999-2001 VAST20W and 2001 CSL20W trailer converter dollies. The affected dollies were incorrectly built to have a hole in the center of the axle beam pointing downward. The hole at the bottom causes a stress crack in the tension side of the beam resulting in axle failure.

The risk

If the axle fails, the dolly could steer erratically, causing swerving, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Silver Eagle will notify owners and instruct them to inspect their dollies for the position of the axle beam center hole. Anyone that has an affected dolly can get get a free replacement axle beam (installation is the owners responsibility) or $500 towards a replacement dolly for scrapping their old dolly. The recall began on September 20, 2013. Owners may contact Silver Eagle at 1-800-547-6792.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 13V373000.
