NHTSA campaign 13V170000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Newmar Corporation: Exterior Lighting

Newmar Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on May 1, 2013 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 103. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Newmar Corporation is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Canyon Star motorhomes manufactured August 4, 2011, through February 19, 2013, for failing to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment." The affected vehicles may have missing reflectors on the rear cap.

The risk

The absence of reflectors could reduce the ability for others to see the motorhome, increasing the risk that another vehicle may crash into the motorhome.

The remedy

Newmar will notify owners and dealers will install the required reflectors. The safety recall began on June 20, 2013. Owners may contact Newmar at 1-574-773-7791.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 13V170000.
