NHTSA campaign 13V049000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Spartan ERV: Equipment

Spartan ERV reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 11, 2013 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 20. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Spartan ERV is recalling certain model year 2008-2009 RMA 75, RMA 103, and TDA aerial fire apparatus manufactured from April 04, 2008, through April 13, 2010 and equipped with hydraulic extension and retraction cylinders produced by RamRod Industries. The cylinders on the affected vehicles may have welded rod eyes that were not properly heat treated during the manufacturing process.

The risk

An improperly manufactured rod eye end attachment may fracture or separate. In the event two affected cylinders are installed on the same aerial lift device, the aerial lift may retract without warning and cause severe injury and/or property damage.

The remedy

Spartan ERV will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected cylinders, free of charge. The recall began on February 25, 2013. Owners may contact Spartan ERV at 1-800-867-6478, Option 2.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 13V049000.
