Fontaine Modification: Steering
Fontaine Modification reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 8, 2013 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 811. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
Fontaine Modification is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Navistar International 4300, 4400, 7300, 7400, and 7500 trucks; manufactured January 1, 2011 through January 9, 2013 and were modified to be able to be steered from either front seat. Certain steering assembly retaining clips may not be completely engaged, resulting in the clips coming loose.
The risk
Without a retaining clip, the steering may feel "loose" and be unresponsive which may increase steering difficulty and the likelihood of a vehicle crash.
The remedy
Fontaine will notify owners and dealers will inspect each truck's steering cross shaft assembly. Any that are found defective will have the complete steering cross shaft assembly replaced, free of charge. The recall began on April 12, 2013. Owners may contact Fontaine at 1-800-366-8246.

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 13V042000.
