Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Nov 23, 2012 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 13,644. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America (MFTA) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 FE83D, FE84D, FE85D, and FG84D trucks; manufactured from May 27, 2004, through May 14, 2007. The fuel pipes may crack due to an improper manufacturing process. Additionally, the fuel pipe flare nuts may have been insufficiently tightened.

The risk

Cracked fuel pipes or loose fuel pipe flare nuts may leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a vehicle fire.

The remedy

MFTA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fuel pipes and tighten or replace them as needed, free of charge. The safety recall began on January 21, 2013. Owners may contact MFTA at 1-856-467-4500.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 12V545000.
