NHTSA campaign 12V463000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Vermeer Manufacturing Company: Structure

Vermeer Manufacturing Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 20, 2012 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 3. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Vermeer is recalling two model year 2012 and one model year 2013 HG6000TX horizontal grinder trailers, manufactured from July 20, 2012, through August 21, 2012, equipped with a dolly transport option. Due to incorrect machining, the kingpin used with the assembly that converts the tracked grinder into a trailer can experience excessive wear.

The risk

Wear on the kingpin may result in its failure, which could allow the trailer to separate from the towing vehicle, possibly striking another vehicle, a stationary object, or a bystander, causing property damage and/or personal injury.

The remedy

Vermeer will notify owners, and dealers will replace the kingpin free of charge. The safety recall began on November 19, 2012. Owners may contact Vermeer at 1-800-829-0051 or 1-641-621-7060.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 12V463000.
