NHTSA campaign 12V431000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Ford Motor Company: Engine and Engine Cooling

Ford Motor Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 4, 2012 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 6,146. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through August 31, 2012, equipped with 1.6L engines. The cylinder head cup plug (freeze plug) may become dislodged resulting in significant loss of engine coolant.

The risk

As leaking engine coolant evaporates on the hot engine, the glycol may ignite causing an engine compartment fire.

The remedy

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will seal the existing plug and add a secondary plug cover, free of charge. The safety recall began on September 11, 2012. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 12V431000.
