Ducati North America: Steering
Ducati North America reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 10, 2012 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 2,411. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
Ducati is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 1199 Panigale motorcycles manufactured from March 16, 2012, through July 12, 2012. Screws that secure the steering damper to the steering head could fall out due to an insufficient amount of Loctite applied to the threads.
The risk
The steering damper can detach from the steering head which can lead to loss of control of the motorcycle, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy
Ducati will notify owners, and authorized dealers will remove both screws, clean the threads, apply the proper amount of Loctite, and tighten to the proper torque settings, free of charge. The safety recall began on October 15, 2012. Owners may contact Ducati at 1-800-231-6696 or through their website at www.ducati.com.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 12V400000.
