NHTSA campaign 12V399000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Ducati North America: Steering

Ducati North America reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 10, 2012 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 2,411. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Ducati is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 1199 Panigale motorcycles manufactured from March 16, 2012, through July 12, 2012 . Due to an incorrect assembly tolerance, the Uniball bearing on the damper rod eyelet could slip out of its seat on the Ohlins steering damper.

The risk

The steering damper can detach from its mounting point which can lead to loss of control of the motorcycle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Ducati will notify owners, and authorized dealers will install a special washer at the steering damper's mounting point, free of charge. The safety recall began on October 15, 2012. Owners may contact Ducati at 1-800-231-6696 or through their website at www.ducati.com.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 12V399000.
