NHTSA campaign 12V358000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Daimler Trucks North America: Suspension › Front

Daimler Trucks North America reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 24, 2012 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 2. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is recalling two model year 2013 Saf-T-Liner C2 Thomas Built school buses manufactured from April 18, 2012, through May 11, 2012, and equipped with Detroit Axle brand front axle knuckles. The front knuckles on these vehicles may have a machining error in the wheel bearing area which may lead to premature spindle failure.

The risk

If the spindle fails, the wheel may separate from the knuckle, resulting in loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the affected components, free of charge. The recall began on August 10, 2012. Owners may contact Daimler Trucks North America toll free at 1-800-547-0712.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 12V358000.
