Elkhart Coach: Structure › Body › Roof and Pillars
Elkhart Coach reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 23, 2012 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 2. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
Elkhart Coach is recalling certain model year 2011 and 2012 transit buses, models 9215-0200 and 9250-0700, equipped with ProLo bus roof escape hatches. Increased friction between the rear plate assemblies, may result in an opening force of the ProLo roof hatches that exceeds Federal standard requirements. Thus, these hatches fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 217, "Bus Emergency Exits and Window Retention and Release."
The risk
In the event of an emergency, a noncompliant hatch may not provide a means of readily accessible egress, increasing the risk of injury to the vehicle occupants.
The remedy
Elkhart Coach will notify the owners, and these buses will be repaired free of charge. The safety recall began during July 2012. Owners may contact Elkhart at 1-574-264-5179.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 12V348000.
