NHTSA campaign 12V156000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Maxey Trailers, Inc.: Equipment

Maxey Trailers, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Apr 9, 2012 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 14. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

MAXEY TRAILER IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 GOOSENECK TANDEM DUAL FLATBED TRAILERS MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 2011 THROUGH DECEMBER 2011, EQUIPPED WITH DEXTER AXLE ELECTRIC/HYDRAULIC (E/H) BRAKE ACTUATOR PUMPS. SOME OF THESE PUMPS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN PROPERLY HEAT TREATED. THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE PREMATURE WEAR OF SOME CRITICAL COMPONENTS IN THESE PUMPS WHICH CAN RENDER THE UNIT INOPERABLE.

The risk

THE E/H BRAKE ACTUATOR PROVIDES BRAKING POWER TO THE TRAILER BRAKES. FAILURE OF THE ACTUATOR CAN RESULT IN THE LOSS OF BRAKING EFFORT BY THE TRAILER, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

MAXEY TRAILERS MAILED NOTICES OF THE RECALL TO OWNERS ON APRIL 2, 2012. DEXTER AXLE DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE E/H BRAKE ACTUATOR PUMPS FREE OF CHARGE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MAXEY TRAILERS AT 1-903-784-8059.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 12V156000.
