NHTSA campaign 12V080000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Pierce Manufacturing: Engine and Engine Cooling › Engine › Diesel

Pierce Manufacturing reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 28, 2012 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 276. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

PIERCE IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010-2012 ARROW XT, DASH CF, QUANTUM AND VELOCITY EMERCENCY VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM OCTOBER 13, 2010, THROUGH FEBRUARY 8, 2012, AND EQUIPPED WITH DETROIT DIESEL DD13 EPA 2010 ENGINES. THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN SOFTWARE NORMALLY PROVIDED TO PROTECT THE ENGINE AND VEHICLE MAY NOT HAVE BEEN DISABLED ON ENGINES INTENDED FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLE APPLICATIONS.

The risk

IF THE VEHICLE OPERATOR RECEIVES AND IGNORES MULTIPLE WARNINGS INDICATING THE NEED FOR OPERATOR INTERVENTION, THE ENGINE MAY SHUT DOWN UNEXPECTEDLY. UNEXPECTED EMERGENCY VEHICLE ENGINE SHUTDOWN UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS COULD HAMPER RESCUE OPERATIONS AND PLACE THE PUBLIC AT RISK.

The remedy

PIERCE WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DETROIT DIESEL DEALERS WILL DISABLE THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN SOFTWARE, FREE OF CHARGE. PIERCE HAS NOT PROVIDED A NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PIERCE AT 888-974-3723.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 12V080000.
