Gillig Corporation: Equipment
Gillig Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 8, 2011 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 63. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
GILLIG IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 LOW FLOOR BUSES MANUFACTURED FROM AUGUST 1, 2011, THROUGH OCTOBER 21, 2011, EQUIPPED WITH PARKER HYDRAULIC PUMPS. SOME HYDRAULIC STEERING PUMPS DO NOT DELIVER ENOUGH FLUID OR PRESSURE TO THE STEERING GEAR, MAKING THE BUSES DIFFICULT TO STEER AT LOW SPEEDS.
The risk
AN UNEXPECTED CHANGE IN THE EFFORT REQUIRED BY THE DRIVER TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL MAY AFFECT THE DRIVERS CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy
GILLIG WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND IN CONJUNCTION WITH PARKER TECHNICIANS PARKER WILL REPLACE THE SPOOL INSIDE THE VALVE ASSEMBLY. FOR PUMPS WITH VALVE SUBASSEMBLY DATE CODE 14/11 THE ENTIRE PUMP WILL BE REPLACED. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JANUARY 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT GILLIG SERVICE AT 1-800-735-1500.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 11V575000.
