Cfmoto Powersports, Inc.: Service Brakes, Hydraulic

Cfmoto Powersports, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Nov 10, 2011 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 6,405. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

CFMOTO IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005 THROUGH 2009 CF250T V3, AND CF205T V5 AUTOMATIC MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED FROM JANUARY 1, 2005, THROUGH DECEMBER 31, 2009. THESE MODELS WERE BUILT WITH A LEFT HAND REAR WHEEL BRAKE INSTEAD OF THE REQUIRED RIGHT FOOT OPERATED REAR WHEEL BRAKE. THEREFORE, THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NUMBER 123, "MOTORCYCLE CONTROLS AND DISPLAYS."

The risk

THE ABSENCE OF STANDARDIZED MOTORCYCLE CONTROLS MAY HINDER THE OPERATORS ABILITY TO EFFECTIVELY BRAKE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

CFMOTO WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RIGHT FOOT CONTROL REAR WHEEL BRAKE KIT, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 10, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CFMOTO AT 1-888-823-6686.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 11V544000.
