NHTSA campaign 11V512000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Great Lakes Manufacturing Inc.: Service Brakes, Air › Antilock › Abs Warning Light

Great Lakes Manufacturing Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 13, 2011 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 226. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

GREAT LAKES IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2002-2007 TRAILERS, EQUIPPED WITH THE MSQR 5000 DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE REGULATOR/QUICK RELEASE VALVE DEVICE MANUFACTURED BY AIR BRAKE SYSTEMS. THE MSQR 5000 DOES NOT CONTAIN THE REQUISITE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM OR WARNING LIGHT AND THUS FAILS TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NUMBER 121, "AIR BRAKE SYSTEMS." SEE THE ABOVE LIST FOR THE MODELS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.

The risk

THE PURPOSE OF THE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD (FMVSS) FOR AIR BRAKE SYSTEMS, NO. 121, IS TO INSURE SAFE BRAKING PERFORMANCE UNDER NORMAL AND EMERGENCY CONDITIONS. THE MSQR 5000, WHICH WAS INSTALLED IN THE TRAILERS SUBJECT TO THE RECALL TO SATISFY FMVSS NO. 121'S ABS REQUIREMENTS, DOES NOT MEET THE DEFINITION OF AN ABS AS REQUIRED BY FMVSS NO. 121. ALSO, THE TRAILERS DO NOT HAVE A LIGHT TO WARN THE OPERATOR OF AN ABS MALFUNCTION AS REQUIRED BY FMVSS NO. 121 THESE DEFICIENCIES INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

GREAT LAKES WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND WILL REPLACE THE UNIT WITH A COMPLIANT ONE, FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JANUARY 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT GREAT LAKES AT 1-920-842-2012.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 11V512000.
