NHTSA campaign 11V439000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Carriage, Inc: Equipment › Recreational Vehicle/Trailer

Carriage, Inc reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 26, 2011 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 596. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

CARRIAGE IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2011 CAMEO, CARRI-LITE, MODEL YEAR 2010-2011 ROYALS, AND MODEL YEAR 2009 DOMANI 5TH WHEEL TRAILERS WITH GENERATOR TRANSFER SWITCHES. THE GENERATOR TRANSFER SWITCH MAY NOT BE MANUFACTURED OR INSTALLED TO THE PROPER SPECIFICATION CAUSING A POTENTIAL FOR EXCESSIVE HEAT BUILD UP INSIDE THE SWITCH.

The risk

THE ELEVATED ELECTRICAL LOADS MAY CAUSE OVERHEATING OF THE LUGS AND DEGRADING OF THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS. IF ENOUGH HEAT BUILDS UP INSIDE THE SWITCH, THE SWITCH COULD MELT AND CATCH FIRE.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE GENERATOR TRANSFER SWITCHES AND REPLACE THEM AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING SEPTEMBER 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CARRIAGE AT 1-574-642-3622.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 11V439000.
