Navistar, Inc reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 22, 2011 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 340. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
NAVISTAR IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 AND 2012 IC CE AND RE SCHOOL BUSES MANUFACTURED FROM OCTOBER 8, 2009, THROUGH APRIL 14, 2011. THESE BUSES WERE BUILT WITHOUT OR INCORRECTLY INSTALLED FLOOR CHANNEL REINFORCEMENTS. ACCORDINGLY, THE BUSES FAIL TO CONFORM WITH THE SEAT BACK REAR FORCE AND DISPLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 222, "SCHOOL BUS PASSENGER SEATING AND CRASH PROTECTION."
The risk
NONCOMPLIANCE TO THE STANDARD INCREASES THE PASSENGER'S RISK OF REARWARD EJECTION FROM THE SEAT WHICH MAY CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
The remedy
NAVISTAR WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE BUSES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE SEPTEMBER 16, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NAVISTAR AT 1-800-448-7825.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 11V368000.
