Ducati North America: Equipment
Ducati North America reported this defect to federal regulators on Jun 27, 2011 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 964. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
DUCATI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 DIAVEL MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 23, 2010, THROUGH MAY 12, 2011. THE BRASS INSERTS INSTALLED IN THE CHAIN GUARD MAY DEFORM OVER TIME, RESULTING IN THE POSSIBLE LOOSENING OF THE LICENSE PLATE HOLDER RETAINING SCREWS ON THE REAR SWING-ARM. THIS SITUATION COULD CAUSE THE LICENSE PLATE HOLDER TO BECOME LOOSE DURING NORMAL OPERATION OF THE MOTORCYCLE.
The risk
LOOSENING OF THE LICENSE PLATE HOLDER COULD INTERFERE WITH THE MOTORCYCLE'S REAR WHEEL ROTATION AND THEREBY INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy
DUCATI DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CHAIN GUARD WITH AN UPDATED VERSION, MANUFACTURED WITH STEEL INSERTS. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 27, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DUCATI AT 1-800-231-6696.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 11V336000.
