Vermeer Manufacturing Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Apr 28, 2011 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 140. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

VERMEER IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2011 BC1200XL SINGLE AXLE BRUSH CHIPPER TRAILERS MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 24, 2009, THROUGH FEBRUARY 14, 2011. DURING THE ASSEMBLY PROCESS THE INCORRECT LUG NUTS WERE INSTALLED ON WHEELS FOR THE 285/75/R16 FLOTATION TIRE OPTION. THESE INCORRECT LUG NUTS MAY LOOSEN, SINCE THE LUG NUTS DO NOT MATCH THE COUNTERSINK HOLES IN THE WHEEL DISC.

The risk

LOOSE LUG NUTS CAN DAMAGE THE WHEEL DISC AND RESULT IN WHEEL SEPARATION FROM THE TRAILER, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LUG NUTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT JUNE 1, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VERMEER AT 1-641-628-3141.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 11V262000.
