NHTSA campaign 11V230000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Pierce Manufacturing: Wheels

Pierce Manufacturing reported this defect to federal regulators on Apr 5, 2011 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 5. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

PIERCE IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2011 ARROW XT AND VELOCITY FIRE APPARATUS MANUFACTURED FROM JUNE 30, 2009, THROUGH MARCH 15, 2011. THE FRONT AXLE OF THESE VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH MICHELIN 365/70R22.5 XZA TIRES INSTALLED ON 12.25 INCH WIDE WHEELS. THESE TIRES REQUIRE 10.5 INCH WIDE WHEELS. THEREFORE, THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 120, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES OTHER THAN PASSENGER CARS."

The risk

THE WIDER 12.25 INCH WHEEL MAY CAUSE THE TIRE BEAD TO SEPARATE FROM THE RIM. THIS TIRE BEAD SEPARATION CAN CAUSE A TIRE FAILURE THAT MAY CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW 10.5 INCH WIDE WHEELS AND NEW MICHELIN 365/70R22.5 ZXA TIRES ON THE FRONT AXLE OF THE FIRE APPARATUS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 15, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PIERCE AT 1-920-832-3000.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 11V230000.
