NHTSA campaign 11V197000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Altec Industries Inc.: Equipment

Altec Industries Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Mar 28, 2011 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 832. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ALTEC IS RECALLING CERTAIN AT35-G, AT37-G, AT235, AND AT237 AERIAL DEVICES MANUFACTURED FROM JANUARY 2005 THROUGH OCTOBER 2008. THESE UNITS ARE EQUIPPED WITH BILLET STEEL COUNTERWEIGHT THAT IS WELDED IN PLACE. IN THE EVENT OF WELD FAILURE, THE COUNTERWEIGHT MAY FALL OUT WHILE TRAVELLING.

The risk

IF THESE STEEL PIECES FALL IN THE PATH OF THE VEHICLE OR OTHER TRAFFIC, A VEHICLE CRASH INVOLVING DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY MAY RESULT.

The remedy

ALTEC HAS DEVELOPED KITS TO IMPROVE THE ATTACHMENT OF THE BILLET STEEL COUNTERWEIGHTS. CUSTOMERS AT THEIR OPTION MAY PERFORM THE REPAIR OR HAVE A DEALER INSTALL THE KIT FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT ALTEC AT 1-877-462-5832.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 11V197000.
