Hino Motors Sales U.S.A., Inc.: Engine and Engine Cooling › Exhaust System
Hino Motors Sales U.S.A., Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Apr 16, 2010 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 560. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
HINO IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010 TRUCKS. THE UPPER BOLT OF THE CENTER EXHAUST HANGER MAY NOT HAVE BEEN PROPERLY TIGHTENED DURING THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS. IF THE BOLTS WERE OVER TIGHTENED, THE BOLTS AND THE HANGER BRACKET MAY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED. THIS COULD CAUSE THE BOLT TO FAIL AND THUS THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WOULD NOT BE SUPPORTED AS DESIGNED.
The risk
THIS CONDITION WOULD PLACE ADDITIONAL STRESS ON THE OTHER EXHAUST SUPPORT DEVICES AND COULD LEAD TO ADDITIONAL FAILURES. IF THIS CONDITION WERE UNDETECTED IT ULTIMATELY COULD RESULT IN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM SEPARATING FROM THE VEHICLE, THUS FALLING ONTO THE SURFACE OF THE ROADWAY. IF THIS FALLEN PORTION OF THE EXHAUST SYSTEM IS STRUCK BY A VEHICLE IT COULD ULTIMATELY RESULT IN A CRASH.
The remedy
HINO WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 9, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HINO AT 248-699-9330.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 10V155000.
