NHTSA campaign 09V309000 · Part 573 safety recall report

General Motors Corp.: Service Brakes, Air › Supply › Compressor

General Motors Corp. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 29, 2009 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1,880. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

GM IS RECALLING 1,880 MODEL YEAR 2007 CHEVROLET KODIAK AND T-SERIES, GMC TOPKICK AND T-SERIES, AND ISUZU F-SERIES AND H-SERIES PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 7.8L DIESEL ENGINE. THE AIR COMPRESSOR IN SOME OF THESE VEHICLES MAY NOT BUILD ENOUGH AIR PRESSURE TO SUPPORT THE AIR BRAKE SYSTEM. IF THIS CONDITION WERE TO OCCUR WHILE THE VEHICLES WAS STATIONARY (BRAKES APPLIED), THE AIR BRAKES WOULD REMAIN APPLIED AND PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM MOVING.

The risk

IF THE DRIVER IGNORES THESE WARNINGS AND CONTINUES TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE, AND IF THERE WAS A CONTINUED LOSS OF PRESSURE, THE REAR SPRING PARKING BRAKES WOULD AUTOMATICALLY APPLY, PREVENTING THE TRUCK FROM BEING DRIVEN.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE AIR COMPRESSOR FOR ITS ABILITY TO BUILD AIR PRESSURE, AND EITHER MODIFY THE AIR COMPRESSOR BY ELIMINATION OF THE SUPPRESSION VALVE OR REPLACE THE AIR COMPRESSOR ASSEMBLY FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING AUGUST 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 09V309000.
