NHTSA campaign 09V115000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Motor Coach Industries, Inc: Suspension › Multiple Axle

Motor Coach Industries, Inc reported this defect to federal regulators on Apr 8, 2009 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 316. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

MCI IS RECALLING 316 MY 2008-2009 J4500 COACH VEHICLES. THESE VEHICLES MAY CONTAIN A DISTORTED VALVE IN THE AUTOMATIC TRACTION CONTROL (ATC) AND/OR ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) SYSTEMS. UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, THE VALVE MAY STICK IN THE OPEN POSITION AND CAUSE FULL SERVICE BRAKE PRESSURE TO BE APPLIED TO EITHER THE FRONT AXLE BRAKES OR THE DRIVE AND TAG AXLE BRAKES, DEPENDING ON WHETHER THE DISTORTED VALVE IS A FRONT OR REAR VALVE.

The risk

IN THE EVENT THE VALVE STICKS IN AN OPEN POSITION AND CAUSES FULL SERVICE BRAKE PRESSURE TO BE APPLIED, A VEHICLE MAY EXPERIENCE BRAKE LOCK-UP ONCE THE VEHICLE SLOWS TO 5 MPH, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE ATC VALVES FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MCI AT 847-285-2000.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 09V115000.
