International Truck & Engine Corporation: Structure › Body › Hood › Hinge and Attachments
International Truck & Engine Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on Jan 28, 2008 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 4,360. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
ON CERTAIN TRUCKS, THE RETENTION SYSTEM OF THE PIN THAT ATTACHES THE HOOD TRAVEL LIMITING SHOCK TO THE MOUNTING BRACKET ON TOP OF THE RADIATOR MAY BECOME DISABLED DUE TO INTERFERENCE BETWEEN IT AND THE GRAB HANDLE POCKET OF THE HOOD. THIS COULD ALLOW THE PIN TO WORK OUT OF THE CONNECTION RESULTING IN THE HOOD SEPARATING FROM THE SHOCK.
The risk
WITH THE VEHICLE IN A STATIONARY POSITION, THIS CONDITION MAY CAUSE A SITUATION WHERE THE INDIVIDUAL OPENING THE HOOD WOULD HAVE TO MANUALLY SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF THE HOOD WITHOUT WARNING WHICH COULD RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
The remedy
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE HOOD/HOOD TRAVEL LIMITING SHOCK CONNECTION PIN AND PIN RETENTION SYSTEM WITH A SYSTEM THAT DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH THE HOOD GRAB HANDLE POCKET. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 11, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT INTERNATIONAL AT 1-800-448-7825.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 08V041000.
