Elgin Sweeper Company: Engine and Engine Cooling › Exhaust System › Manifold/Header/Muffler/Tail Pipe
Elgin Sweeper Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Jan 28, 2008 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 66. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
ON CERTAIN SWEEPERS EQUIPPED WITH COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS (CNG), SWEEPING DEBRIS MAY BUILD UP IN FRONT OF THE REAR AXLE AND IN THE EXHAUST DISCHARGE PIPE. UNDER HEAVY SWEEPING CONDITIONS, THE CNG EXHAUST TEMPERATURES CAN EXCEED 800 DEGREES.
The risk
THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE COULD IGNITE THE DEBRIS. PERSONNEL NEAR THE STREET SWEEPER COULD BE INJURED OR PROPERTY DAMAGE COULD OCCUR.
The remedy
ELGIN WILL INSTALL A NEW EXHAUST SYSTEM IN THESE VEHICLES THAT WILL REDIRECT THE EXHAUST DISCHARGE AWAY FROM THE ELEVATOR SYSTEM AND DEBRIS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 1, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT ELGIN AT 1-877-342-5374.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 08V038000.
