NHTSA campaign 07V484000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Viking RV, LLC.: Equipment › Mechanical › Winch

Viking RV, LLC. reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 16, 2007 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 27. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN FOLDING CAMPING TRAILERS (FCT) EQUIPPED WITH A POWERWINCH UNIT, MODEL P55000, BUILT BY CAREFREE OF COLORADO AND ADDITIONAL AFTERMARKET OR DEALER INSTALLED POWERWINCH UNITS, AN INCORRECT MATERIAL WAS USED IN THE MANUFACTURE OF THE CABLE SHAFTS ON SOME OF THESE POWERWINCH UNITS. UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES WHILE THE FOLDING CAMPING TRAILER TOP IS BEING LIFTED, IF THE WINCH IS PLACED INTO A STALL CONDITION, THE CABLE SHAFT MAY BREAK PRIOR TO THE FUSE OR CIRCUIT BREAKER TRIPPING.

The risk

SHOULD THE CABLE SHAFT BREAK, THE FCT TOP COULD THEN FREE-FALL INTO THE LOWER POSITION, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN INJURIES.

The remedy

VIKING DEALERS WILL REPAIR THESE WINCHES FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING OCTOBER 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VIKING AT 1-269-467-6321.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 07V484000.
