NHTSA campaign 07V466000 · Part 573 safety recall report

BMW of North America, LLC: Service Brakes, Hydraulic › Fluid

BMW of North America, LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 2, 2007 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 510. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, DURING LONG PERIODS OF RIDING AT SUSTAINED HIGH ENGINE RPM, VIBRATION WITHIN THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR CAN CAUSE THE BRAKE FLUID TO FOAM. THIS COULD ALLOW AIR TO ENTER THE FRONT BRAKE SYSTEM WHICH COULD LEAD TO A LOSS OF FRONT BRAKING EFFICIENCY.

The risk

AIR IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM CAN LEAD TO A LOSS OF BRAKING CAPABILITY, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL BLEED THE FRONT BRAKES AND INSTALL A DAMPER WEIGHT IN THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR. THIS WEIGHT WILL DAMPEN POSSIBLE VIBRATIONS THAT CAN CAUSE FOAMING OF THE BRAKE FLUID. THE RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 14, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 07V466000.
